    Howdy All,

The Collector's Trove and Gary Con would like to announce an ongoing series of events at Gary Con that pay special attention to the early days of war gaming prior to the introduction of Dungeons & Dragons. The special events will be gathered under the aegis: Legends of Wargaming.

To find these events in the registration catalog type "Legends of Wargaming" into the search field and all will be conveniently be pulled up for you!

These time capsule events bring Gary Con attendees the classic board and miniature wargames that were a staple during the early days of the Lake Geneva Tactical Studies Association (LGTSA), International Federation of Wargaming (IFW), Castle & Crusade Society, Midwest Military Simulation Association (MMSA), and Gen Con. Each event will present the history of the game and its significance to the hobby of war gaming and even role-playing games. The original rules, vintage figures, and authentic accessories will be used during play. When possible, the events will involve individuals who played, refereed, and authored the games along side Gary Gygax and his friends during this golden age of war gaming.

Each year in the Legends of Wargaming room (Maple Lawn C), Gary Con in conjunction with The Collector's Trove online auction house (www.thecollectorstrove.com) have put up museum-quality displays featuring the history of the gaming hobby. This year we are proud to present: Braunstein's 50th Anniversary! Started in 1968 by David Wesely and held at his home in Minneapolis, Minnesota, this game is at the roots of the role playing game phenomena! The display will offer an unprecedented look at the history of the Braunstein game through photographs, artifacts, replicas, and memorabilia from the history and development of the game.

Additionally, Dave Wesley himself will be running two special, ticketed sessions of the game, the original, set in the fictional German town of Braunstein, and the fourth iteration of the game, Banania, set in an imaginary banana republic!

Chainmail Jousting: Saddle Up! Step up to the lists and see how you fare in the annual, Gary Con Chainmail Jousting Tourney! Step up to the list and see how you fare in the third annual, Gary Con Chainmail Jousting Tourney! Each game takes 5-10 minutes to play. You do not need a ticket for this free event--just come to Maple Lawn C from 8 am Thursday and Friday, and on Saturday from 9 am to noon. A dedicate area, table 121 will be set up with a beautiful diorama of vintage 70mm Elastolin figures and self-guiding instructions.

The top competitors from jousts taking place prior to noon Saturday will qualify for the second round of the tournament at 1 pm Saturday, when the four best knights compete in an elimination round.

The result of these matches will be posted at 8 pm Saturday, revealing the two knights who will compete in the Grand Tournament. Come and cheer them on!

    Special Events!

In addition to the Legends of Wargaming events, The Collector's Trove is proud to present the following incredible events:

Saturday 2 pm and 6 pm: Gaming at Gary's House. Each year since the 40th Anniversary of D&D, the owners of Gary Gygax's former home at 330 Center St. in Lake Geneva have invited us to run special sessions of Original Dungeons & Dragons during Gary Con. This year, two sessions will be offered to Gary Con attendees. The adventure for these sessions will be a Gary Con first! An incredibly deep, original Greyhawk Castle level by Rob Kuntz -- an adventure that was last run at 330 Center St. in 1974 in the very same dining room in which we will be playing! This will be the first time this adventure has been offered to the public in nearly 44 years!

Thursday 12 pm and Saturday 10 pm: Secrets of Blackmoor. This is a feature length documentary film about the origins of RPGs. It presents the story of the Twin Cities gamers and their search for the Fog of War via the discovery of an old war game from the 1880's called: Strategos. Over a span 10 years, their efforts at creating the ultimate war game experience gives rise to D&D the first published RPG in 1974.

Thursday 8 pm: Tonisborg. In May 1971 Dave Arneson invited friends to play a Middle Ages Braunstein and they were hooked! A year and a half later he would demonstrate this new game to Gary Gygax who would use it to create Dungeons & Dragons!

As one of the few dungeons from a time before the publication of D&D, Tonisborg is a true relic.

Created in the summer of 1973 and then misplaced for over 3 decades, it has come to be known as The Lost Dungeon of Tonisborg. Recently re-discovered by the Secrets of Blackmoor production team it is now yours to explore.

All participants will receive a certificate of participation and a special 4 level set of dungeon maps and keys upon completion of this adventure.

Be one of the first to delve into Greg Svenson's storied Tonisborg Dungeon in search of the Three Crowns of Power.

Thursday 6 pm, Friday 6pm, and Saturday 6 pm: Blackmoor. Now is your chance to experience what it was like to play those early Blackmoor Castle dungeon adventures with one of its original players Bob Meyers! Bob has carried on the tradition of running Blackmoor for Dave Arneson's original players and they say it is the closest thing they have experienced to actually playing with Dave Arneson as their Dungeon Master!

    Wanted: New Marshals!

Each year, The Collector’s Trove seeks out new events to sponsor for Legends of Wargaming. Currently we are seeking new Game Marshals to teach and demonstrate just about any 1975 or earlier miniature or board wargame.

This year we are excited to have the following new Legends of Wargaming Marshals join us: M. Griffith, Gizmo Mathboy, Mark Clover, Douglas Waltman, and Edwin Stahlnecker. Welcome aboard!

Oftentimes our referees come up with new twists on the theme and use the old rules and even vintage equipment to conduct novel new games, so let your imagination run wild! Contact us at [email protected] if you are interested in being a part of this phenomenal program!
