I vaguely remembered watching the old BBC series "I, Claudivs" with my Dad many years ago. SO when I stumbled across it while browsing Netflix- I put it in my queue and sure enough I got to it eventually. This is a really good show! It is definitely a drama with minimal special effects or action sequences. The dialogue is the focus nothing else. So if you like roman history and or that type of drama, I highly recommend it. The series was done in 1976- and had a few faces that I recognized. There is a John Hurt, a very young Jonathan Rhys-Davies and best of all Patrick Stewart sporting hair on his head! I gained some respect for Patrick Stewart since he played a tough, evil captain of the guard. I always thought of him as the panty-waist, pacifist, tea-sipping wussy captain on the revised Star Trek show. Anyway- I hope you enjoy I, Claudivs as much as I did.
WOW, does this bring back memories!! YES, I remember, it was on the local PBS station, channel 10, I think? Now that I know it's still out there I just gotta see it again!!
I didn't know that "Rome" only ran for two seasons---I may have to check that out again (I saw a few eps while travelling for work a few years ago, but that was it: I liked what I saw, though).
I Clavdivs was awesome. A movie group I used to be in had us watch this. We spread it out over several weeks. I am now the proud owner of the DVD set. The production was not enhanced but it's still great. Rome was indeed only a 2 season set, and a great porn... er... I mean great "history" of Julius Caesar.
While it’s probably not for a history snob, Rome was a great ‘period’ series. I loved the writing and character development. I thought it deed a great job at capturing the savagery and debauchery that is associated with the Romans.
I watched I, Claudius again after I finished watching Rome. It’s almost perfect timing where one ends and the next begins. I read last year that some film company picked up the rights to I, Claudius, and that a film may soon be on the way.
I would definitely go see it- although I know it will be very different from the BBC series. More action and less plot and character development. I am surprised that there has not been a big Hannibal movie done in the past 10 years or so. That would be an interesting movie that has action, intrigue and drama a plenty. Flint Dille mentioned that as a potential project about 5 years ago or so- but nothing ever came of it.
I really hope a remake of I, Clavdivs happens. And a Hannibal flick would be good too. I want to see the elephants trying to cross the Alps...
My first reaction when I think of going to see an I, Claudius or Hannibal movie is, ‘That would be cool!”, but then I see flashes of Troy, Alexander, or 300 and think seppuku would be just as entertaining.
