    Hi all.

None of my buddies are coming to GaryCon (because most of them are not gamers) and I'm kind of shy around folks I don't know and I while I don't mind drinking alone I'd rather drink with friends and talk about gaming. So, at the risk of sounding totally pathetic, I'm taking this opp to ask if anyone out there would mind my joining your group or otherwise hang out a bit at lunch and after hours in the bar, etc. I'm a very normal sort of guy, with wife, teenage girls, dogs, job as an IT consultant, and so on.

And I'm kind of new to gaming. That is, while I'm 50-ish years old, I only discovered gaming a few years ago -- really! I haven't been gaming since the mid-70s like so many other gamers I know -- and mostly I play cardboard hex war games. But I'm tremendously interested in RPGs and am going to GaryCon with the intention of playing some sessions of something or other and maybe meeting some new friends. I play in a D&D group, but we only meet 6 times a year, which is not nearly enough for me, and I'd like to check out some other systems. I'm kind of attracted to the Castles & Crusades stuff (I've just started reading their magazine) and Hackmaster (ditto) rather than D&D. It's normal for me to steer away from the best-sellers of anything and instead investigate the other offerings, which is why I like Linux instead of Windows and Rhapsody instead of iTunes, etc.

Am I rambling? Sorry. Anyway, if there's anyone out there who would like to tip a brew or two in the evenings, or groups that wouldn't mind an outsider joining in, please let me know.

    Looking forward,

Hey there Mythulto, me and the guys from the Dead Games Society would be happy to have you hang out with us to share a drink and some good roleplay conversation during the convention. We're all about old school games, be they RPG, strategic war games or boardgame in nature.

Incidentally, myself and Silas are in IT as well!

IT here, as are two of the three people coming with me...lol

Hey Red Wizard, thanks for the invite. I'd be very pleased to meet the Dead Games Society. When you say "share a drink" do you mean like one beer and four straws? Can I have my own beer instead?

Yeah, the IT thing is funny. Sounds like many of us will have that in common, too. That's another area that I came into late. Never studied it in college. I was a salesman for years. I got my first computer in 1994, taught myself everything and started my own IT biz in 1997.

PS: I have to confess I didn't tell the whole truth in my post; I don't want to drink beer -- I prefer scotch (in my own glass).

As it stands, I am coming alone as well, although I have a friend that may be joining me from the DC area. Anywho, you are always welcome to share a few pints with me or us, however it turns out. Unlike those Dead Games Fellas, I'll let you have your own beer! ;) Just kidding fellas! If you make it out the night before the con starts, there is a party train heading to a local pub that you should join up with. "The Keeper" is the unofficial organizer of Thursday night's events. he can give you all the details.

I am in IT as well (although my graduate degree is in something so positively esoteric that no one will pay me to do).

    Many gamers are computer geeks.

There are many games on the schedule aside from D&D. I am running Buck Rogers and John Carter Warlord of Mars.

I will probably bring some pick-up games with me as well (perhaps DC Universe and C&C)

Nevertheless, we look forward to meeting you, and everyone else!

And if you're looking to try C&C be sure and check out the games I'll be running Friday nite and Saturday morning.

My wife and I will be there most of the weekend, and we are pretty proudly uber-geeks when it comes to gaming.... she teaches middle-school and I teach theatre and comm at a small 2-year university up here in WI.... my group has people who are BOTH theatre and Tech types at the same time...

More than happy to tip a drink or two w/ you. It's always good to meet a new gamer. This hobby is always looking for fresh meat....errr blood.....I mean new people. ;)

And if you're liking Hackmaster, I'll make sure to introduce you to the guys who make the game. They're good folks and will be running a number of sessions at GC.

Just look for me....I'll be the guy with the name badge that says Geekpreacher.

Four straws? What, you think money for straws just grows on trees?!

Okay, you can have yer own straw then, even yer own scotch. To be honest, I'm a vodka drinker. And if I could find a good cigar bar in the area, I'd be in heaven.

I've been known to have a stogie or two in an evening. Sometimes it's the only vegetable I get during the day.

I just checked with the Lodge at Geneva Ridge. They allow cigar smoking in the lounge and have comfy chairs in front of the fireplace. They also sell cigars.

Further, The Abbey Resort is less than 15 minutes away and it has a cigar bar called Steamers http://theabbeyresort.com/dining/index.cfm

In either case, because of Wisconsin health laws you will have to clip your own butt.

Always an extra chair at my table. :D

(Wait a minute? There's always three empty chairs at my table.) :?

Anyhover, always room for one more, and as Druvas mentioned, there will be a gathering at Next Door Pub on thursday evening before GC2, if your inclined.

I think this was a totally wise thing to do, Mythulto!

I came out to GC last year not really knowing anyone and lucked out when Dale introduced himself (the gamerdar is strong in this one) within ten minutes of me checking into the hotel. Folks are certainly friendly but I would have felt a lot more confident going in if I'd already made a point of pre-meeting some people.

I'd be glad to drink with you. Were you reading SF/fantasy back in the day? I'm always curious to hear the perspective of folks whose formative reading experiences weren't shaped by the post-Tolkien boom of Terry Brooks et al. the way mine was.

Methinks I want to move my game to the lounge. D&D by the hearth with a beer and a stogie. I can only think of one thing that would make it better. Okay, maybe two.

Looks like I picked the wrong con to give up cigars!

And I happen to know the owner of the hotel is a big cigar and scotch fan himself. He's not a gamer, but he's a terrific guy. Very fun. Open minded. Perhaps he will join us. Perhaps he could be TURNED. Yes. Yeessssss! Moo-ha-ha-ha.
