    Howdy All,

Just a Quick note to let you all know that a number of amazing events have been added through the Legends of Wargaming. Due to some personal events and obligations I was preoccupied and somewhat reclacitrant in arranging my contribution to GaryCon. Thanks to Luke, Skip, and especially Dave Conant, for their patience and support!

This is the most up-to-date listing of the Legends of Wargaming events. This should be one amazing convention!

The Collector's Trove and Gary Con would like to announce an ongoing series of events at Gary Con that pay special attention to the early days of wargaming prior to the introduction of Dungeons & Dragons. The special events will be gathered under the aegis: Legends of Wargaming. These events attempt to bring Gary Con attendees the classic board and miniature wargames that were a staple during the early days of the Lake Geneva Tactical Studies Association (LGTSA), International Federation of Wargaming (IFW), Castle & Crusade Society, Midwest Military Simulation Association (MMSA), and Gen Con. Each event will exhibit a history of the game and its significance to the hobby of wargaming and even role-playing games. Also displayed will be various memorabilia and photos and original rules, figures, and accessories used during play. When possible, the events will involve individuals who played, refereed, and authored the games during this golden age of wargaming. This is your chance to experience what it was like to play these games at the earliest Gen Cons and Gary Gygax’s own basement in Lake Geneva! The games will be taught and refereed so interest is all that is required by players. Even if you don’t sign up to play be sure to stop by to view the displays, ask questions, and watch the fun of classic wargaming!

The following are the returning Legends of Wargaming events currently scheduled for Gary Con IX. To find these events in the registration catalog type "Legends of Wargaming" into the search field and all will be conveniently be pulled up for you!

The Collector’s Trove is always working with Gary Con and its VIPs to bring you amazing Legends of Wargaming events. This year is no exception. In addition to our regular offerings Legends of Wargaming is proud to feature the following incredible new events:

A special, large-scale board game of the Source of the Nile, complete with beautifully painted 25mm figures and personally run by the game's designers GaryCon VIPs, Ross Maker and David Wesely!

Released by Discovery Games in 1977, players take on the role of European explorers in the 19th century as they delve the interior of the Dark Continent! The explorers seek fame and fortune as they face animal attacks, hostile natives, dangerous river cataracts, starvation, and disease. Explorers typically have a profession such as, Botanist, Doctor, Ethnologist, Geologist, Journalist, Missionary, and Zoologist. Each must try to make some significant discovery and return to England where they present or publish their works to get more funding for further expeditions.

This game is one of Gary and Luke Gygax's favorites! Luke confesses he would play the game for hours on end while home sick from school and quite often would take an extra day to "recuperate" and, of course, play more Source of the Nile!

New Tractics game! In previous years there have been up to 28 people crowded around the Legends of Wargaming sand table, playing and watching Mike Reese run a game of Tractics, a set of miniature rules for WWII armor battles. Tractics was authored by Mike along with Professor Leon Tucker and Gary Gygax. This year Mike has an all new scenario with room for more players!

As mentioned our newest Legends of Wargaming VIP is Ross Maker, who has been gaming for some sixty years and designing games for nearly all that time. He was a member of the Midwest Military Simulation Association (MMSA), a group of wargamers and friends based in St. Paul, MN, that included Dave Arneson, Mike Carr, David Megarry, Maj. David Wesley, and several others that would go on to design a number of popular wargames.

Ross played the original dwarf in Dave Arneson’s Blackmoor campaign and in 1977 he was co-designer with David Wesely of Source of the Nile, which won two Charles S. Roberts Awards, two Strategist Club Awards, a Game Designers’ Guild Select Award and was named to the Games Magazine 100.

Historical Miniature Gaming Society (HMGS) has been gracious enough to place three of their events in the Legends of Wargaming room: Orc's Drift, a Chainmail game run by Kevin Cabai, Arab-Israeli War, a Tractics game by Tibor Ipavic, and The 300, a Classic Warfare scenario by Steve Fratt. Kevin puts on fantastic Chainmail games with an impressive collection of painted figures set in breathtaking battlefield dioramas. Tibor puts on a huge armor battle with and impressive set up and always has a great tactical challenge for players. Steve Fratt is our newest Legends of Wargaming participant and brings you The 300 Spartans and their legendary battle at Thermopylae. This last game will be run using Gary Gygax's Classic Warfare rules and use gorgeously painted, 20mm figures from wargaming icon, Jack Scruby.

Skip Williams, a very busy guy at GaryCon, has brought us a fantastic new addition to our Legends of Wargaming, Dawn Patrol events: Brisfits vs. The Flying Circus. GaryCon veteran Keith Sloan brings a fantastic version of the classic wargame, Jutland but adds miniatures for a very cool battleship game. And, to round out our naval battles, we have the WWII scenario Iron Bottom Sound run by John Bobek, author, The Games of War, using his Action on the High Seas, a set of naval warfare rules used at the GenCon in 1972!

In addition to these fantastic events, The Collector's Trove has put up museum-quality displays featuring the history of the gaming hobby. Previous years have included 40th Anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons, 40th Anniversary of Dungeon!, and last year's! Dave Sutherland III Memorial.

This year we bring you, the Artists of TSR display. Each year in the Legends of Wargaming room, The Collector's Trove online auction house (www.thecollectorstrove.com) has put up museum-quality displays featuring the history of the gaming hobby. Previous years have included the 40th Anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons, 40th Anniversary of Dungeon! board game, and last year's Dave Sutherland III Memorial. Nearly 300 con-attendees visit the display each year which is free and open to all con attendees. This year we are proud to present: The Artists of TSR.

Currently we are seeking referees to teach and demonstrate the following games: Boot Hill, Diplomacy, Outdoor Survival, Alexander, Stratego, Warriors of Mars, or just about any 1975 or earlier miniature or board wargame. Contact us at [email protected] if you are interested in being a part of this phenomenal program!
