I got the Comfort Suites $60 or $70 con rate and it was a steal IMHO. Clean, close to town, lots of amenities and a decent breakfast included. If the location of GCII is nearby, I'll definitely go back.
If Gary Con 2 is going to be 2 or more days, and space is limited, register people on a per day basis so that you don't have a lot of empty space one day.
I received sufficient feedback from folks to realize that I need to make Gary Con a 3 day event to make it a little more value added for people coming from any distance away. My intent is to do 3 days- but I will announce it officially when I get a location locked in.
That is excellent news. I was thinking 3 days would be a good idea, but thought that might have to wait another year perhaps to grow into it.
A list, or hand-outs, for items that will be available at the auction, & post it here about four to six weeks before G.C.2. I think forum members should get a sneak peek.
A GaryCon AD&D Open tourney would be fun. I was at GC #0, but had to leave early, and wasn't able to make it this year. I enjoyed the tours of LG I had with Rob and on the TLG bus tour at LGGC#3. Getting folks together to explore the area a bit might be fun (fun restaurants, etc.), but that would also potentially take away from the gaming
http://www.grandgeneva.com/ Thought I'd post this here as some mentioned wanting a larger venue. Back when this was the Playboy club it was the site for one of the early GEN CONs, so I'm sure it holds a special place in Gygaxian/TSR history. I'll admit it's more than a little pricey, but it should have sufficient space to contain our "madness." Besides, if Dale's idea of gaming cabana girls comes into being--we'll have the perfect venue.
Yes its expensive and it is already booked! I am considering the old Interlacken resort on Hwy 50 or perhaps keeping it small -200 people or less- and doing it at the Como Clubhouse. I will see what I can do about gaming cabana girls
If you guys would like ideas on how to defray the costs, one thought I had was a door prize or two. This would not be a part of the auction but, say, have people give $5 a person to register for the door prize. It could be some piece of gaming history or the like.....something that your average person may not have hanging around. Give them a chance to win a piece of nostalgia even though they may not have the cash for the auction. With that in mind, you may also think about what gamers might want to donate in the way of prizes to help defray the costs. For example, I may have an old figure from the 80s D&D line by LJN that I might be willing to donate. (I'll have to see if I have one that's not MIB.) FWIW, GP
I'm hoping Luke can make it Friday, Saturday, & Sunday. Quick! Some cast Greater Divination! Gaming Cabana Girls would be awesome- and Toga Boys for the Gaming Girls (gotta be fair).
Dale, if you're greeting us at the door, in a toga, you're gonna have to shave your legs. Don't wanna see no HAIRY LEGS!!!!!
Good idea. Maybe take all of the donations and have that be the door prize. I don't have anything super special I want to part with, but I could donate some books, modules and maybe figures that, added together with other's stuff, would make a nice take home gift, especially for $5.
One of the ways money was raised at Gaming Hoopla was what they called a 50/50 split. They sold raffle tickets for 'X' amount & after a number of hours they pulled a ticket. That ticket won half the pot. The other half went to the American Cancer Society. I believe they did this twice on saturday & once on sunday. First pot was around $100.00. If convention bags are to be done you could put a tile with one letter on it. The first person to spell 'Gary Gygax', or whatever, wins. You could also use a deck of poker playing cards in a similar situation. Each con-bag would have 'X' amount of cards & through bartering, wagering on games played, tournaments, buying lunch, etc; convention goers must try to build the best poker hand to be traded in for prizes. The idea here is to get people invovled through interaction with each other. More ideas later, Deke
Well, it seemed like an idea. Maybe in a few years, if and when Gary Con hits big. How was TSR able to pay for it back in the day? I imagine it wasn't that significantly less expensive back then--or was it? And I'm going to hold you to your word about cabana girls.
Did someone say cabana girls? I can imagine great scenes of rolling a critical hit just as a cabana girl brings me a brand new draught of New Glarus... It's so wrong and yet, so right.
