Mike Carr is going to bring a giant Le Mans racing game if there is sufficient interest. Apparently he has a heavily modified version of the 1961 game- with a giant size board, a big scoreboard, racing jerseys for players and cool cars for the track. He is able to take 12-24 players and run it 4, 6 or 8 hours. I believe he wanted to run that on Saturday evening. So that may be a great opportunity to learn a new race gane if that is an area of interest for you and others. Of course I need to get my ducks in a row and post up an event list. I am compiling all the info on the Unofficial Event thread and I will contact those that expressed an interest in running a game.
I have posted this earlier in this thread but I wanted to add some pictures- Does anyone play this game? - 4th Dimension "The Game of Space and Time” c.1979 TSR 5004 Or has anyone played and/or own it? :?:
I notice a lot of older games (awesome!) mentioned, are newer ones, such as Steve Jackson Games' MunchkinQuest allowed as well? If so, I can bring that and run it...it's a 3-4 hour time commit for one game though.
SJ has done some great stuff over the years! You can play pretty much any game you want (newer ones too). The main feel has been the "older game," because a lot of people have not seen or played them in years. It's akin to the throw back uniforms you see the NFL teams sport from time-to-time. I think the only game you would catch some grief with would be D&D 4th Edition- I mean really. You might find yourselves outside in the snow, huddling for warmth, as you rolled yer dice to play that one.
There's a D&D 4e? Huh... ;-) I've got plenty of the older games I can bring as well (not so much the board games though).
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Titan - plays quick, and has snazzy counter artwork by Dave Trampier. For the sci fi crowd, Avalon Hill's Starship Troopers would be a good bet, as well as Steve Jackson's OGRE / GEV. Would also recommend the old Robots microgame, which I played the heck out of back in the day. Actually microgames in general come to think of it - Warriors of Batak, Tau Ceti, etc. All of them played pretty fast so would be great for a weekend con. Also easy to transport to the con! Andy
Titan can be long & drawn out,& I find it kinda boring. Starship Troopers is only three player max. Ogre may show up, just gotta talk to a "fuzzy hero." (His group has loads of mini's, DAMN FANATICS! ) Now, Robots ain't to bad. Let's see, where'd I put that............(back to the gaming closet.)
:? Either you play differently or you have a really different definition of 'quick' than I. At this year's Gencon, the Titan event was slotted for 6 hrs. The one time I played, it went about 8 hrs - and the only reason it didn't go longer was because I couldn't take it anymore and confronted the other player, even though it would have been better strategy to continue dodging and rebuilding for awhile.
:? Either you play differently or you have a really different definition of 'quick' than I. quote] Funny you mention that.. I learned the game from one group of friends who played pretty conservatively and yeah, those games used to go long. Then I started playing it with another group who played it fast and furious, and with them most games last 3-4 hours. After the initial short maneuver & build period, everybody starts going for the throat. It may not be speed chess, but close. Much more fun style of play than the conservative / "builder" approach. Speaking of boardgames, any fans of Avalon Hill's old "Wizard's Quest"? ALways had a soft spot for that one.. Andy
My group (The Dead Games Society) will be putting on a "John Carter Warlord of Mars" game (the 1979 SPI game). We may also put on an Avalon Hill "Frank Herbert's Dune" game--if we have time (we also have RPGs to put on)
I'll make it a point to get my home-made copy done by then, as a new edition from Chessex seems to be the ultimate vaporware, and I'm not paying what people get for it on ebay.
Anyone up for a 60 hour game of 1914? Seriously, had a friend in the USN that I would play this with every other weekend (non-payday); started at about 6 PM Friday night and usually ended at about 5 or 6 AM on Monday , just before morning muster. We only left the laundry room in which we played to eat two or three times in that span; the head was across the hall (pit stops don't count). Played Titan with Tramp many times; never had one last longer than about 3.5 hours.
It looks like there will be some great old boardgames going at Gary Con. Ernie loves Titan and I think he might enjoy playing that game. Last time I played was in the late 70s in the basement of the Dungeon Hobby Shop. I believe that Tom Wham, Jim Ward, Ernie and Tramp were playing. I got my butt kicked early on (3 hours maybe) and the game lasted for many hours more. I last played Fortress America with Dad and Mike Gray in the early 80s. I loved that game. I also enjoyed Conquest of the Empire. I don't know how much time I'll have available, but I sure would like to get into some of them. Chris will be rolling out an event registration on the site soon. What a great opportunity to expose new players to some classic boardgames. Please sign up and run these as official events! Luke
