I would like to do a 25mm game, we call Orc's Drift. Basically we use Gary's first edition Chainmail, albeit modified. Fresh from the victory at Isengardwanda an Impi of Uruk Hai attempt to storm a small detachment of the 24th (complete with Martini-Henrys) at a depot station. Game can be 4-6 hours for up to 12 players. No experience necessary. Table size of 12x6 would be great or a little less. I am fairly open on times and days.

FYI although this is my first Gary Con attended, I have 33 Gencons under my belt. Frank Metzer knows me fairly well from the Auctions. I can send pics on how it looked when I ran it at Gaming Hoopla

Despite my love of the older systems I grew up on, mostly second ed, I think I am a little too rusty to dare run it at GaryCon. That being said I think I can run something newer that I love. Supernatural which uses the Cortex System. If you know nothing of the setting it describes itself best as
I have made an adventure that can be done in four hours or so. For up to six players, pregen characters will be available, all that goodness.

Someone has to be the bad guy; I volunteer.
It is absolutely wonderful that so many people want to run games; Gary would be flat-out delighted. My question is this: From where do you suppose all of the players will come ?

    Luke--What is the hoped-for/expected attendance?
It has been my experience, some 35 years of attendng and running cons, that too many games offered at one time means some will get no interest, some will get a lot, but the majority will only half fill. That majority will then have a substantially less-than-ideal experience; three people signing up for an adventure that really will tax the efforts of 6 or 7 is not going to pan out. Then what? Three people (times however many events this happens to) will have nothing to do.

When the events list is promulgated for sign-ups, this is a very real consideration. At our local cons many years age, we always had a handful of people ready to run ad hoc events when that scenario of un-engaged gamers popped up. We had a small number of tables set aside for pick-up games as well as ad hoc additions.

Another way to try to address this is to take longer games (like my 5 or 6 hour adventures) and schedule them at like 9AM, 2 PM and 7 PM; others are staggered in at one hour intervals. That way, there is always something starting soon, sort of.

    Just my two groats worth...

    I volunteer! :)

I don't think I'd want to run a game with such an august set of DMs/GMs available. I just want to see it be Groundhog's Day so I can keep playing more and more and more...

Kaskoid  raises a good point and one that is important to the overall success (read everybody having a great time) of Gary Con. I am going to go through event submissions and chart them out. Priority goes to the VIPs that are running featured games. If a slot is too crowded, I will ask the GM to switch times or scratch the event from the sign up list. Bottom line is that it will be my call based on analysis of games in that slot and my whimsy ;) There is nothing saying you can't run pick-up games. There should be enough table space available.

So far 101 people have pre-registered. I suspect that we will get 175 people on the low end and the max capacity is 300. My crystal ball says about 225 and that is what I would use as a planning factor if I had to make final prep today.

Yes. The fireside room will be "Gary's Virtual Porch". I have to see about getting a circular wrought iron table and chair set, a beat up set of bino's, some ashtrays, an assortment of books (historical, fantasy, reference and Bible too) and some of those cheap cigarillos for atmosphere :) The featured events will be held on the virtual porch as well as any Q&A sessions- if we set anything up like that.

Does that address the issue or am I missing something?

Frankly, I'm not afraid to go toe to toe with "Greyhawk Extravaganza Extreme" for players in fact I'm just dreading getting a bunch of skill, storytime or whiner type players! ;)

    Just kidding!

But seriously, I will stick to what I said and be loose about running whenever. So don't worry about me. I always start games in the AM to get the longest spread so I can do whatever whenever. All day works for me and any type player has been handled by me (at least hundreds so far) so no one will feel awkward like they don't belong or whatever. I'LL TEACH EM TO BELONG!!! ;) Just kidding! Seriously, people always gravitate to me if they can't get into one game they wanted to do then I guarantee they'll be coming my way...

    Tumbleweed blows across the table...

    WAIT! I take it back!

    ;)

Hey Luke, I just got done with Fall Hoopla last weekend. They had a good turn-out with 90+ people that attended on saturday, but sunday was a bit of a bust. Flyers for Gary Con 2 were posted by me & I had at least a dozen Hoopl-ites asking questions about it. I think with the additional 'ACES' I have up my sleeve, not yet played, we should be able to fill the gaming hall without any problems.
My only suggestion would be to do/have something special on the last day of the Con to draw in any would-be goers that try to leave early. Something for the diehards that stick it out to the end.
Ders my two cents. Later. :)

Hi Kevin, I thought your set up at Fall Hoopla was AWESOME! I was the tall, older looking fart running the Wings of War tourney across the aisle from you. I think your choice of game/scenario would fit MUCH better at Garycon. If I'd had the time I would of played, but was already comitted to my signed-up "pilots." Hope to see you at GC2!

Yeah, this is part of the reason I want to do night games on Friday and Saturday (7 pm). I figured most people would be running events in the late morning and early afternoon. And, I'm more in my comfort zone at night.

Heh, tumbleweeds. Good stuff, Gene. :D

At long last, we've got the Event Submission form up and running. Now don't everyone run out and submit all your events at once, you might overload Luke's brain. You can submit your events here:

Would anyone be interested in me running G1-3 (say one mod a day)? If there is sufficient support for it, I will submit for a time slot.

I don't suppose there is any way to see our submissions prior to the formal event announcements?

Quick question. I've always wanted to play Star Frontiers but never had the opportunity. Will any of the "dead games" be able to be picked up by someone who is new to them? (I'm also wondering because my wife is *hopefully* coming with me this year and she's only played newer versions of D&D and some limited Cthulu. However, she's quite the boardgamer.)

Star Frontiers is one of my favorite systems in part because it has a very elegant mechanic. Its runs on a percentile system, needs only two d10's to play and in general has a simple and logical setup. Assuming DGS is using the original Alpha Dawn rules (I will be if I run my Star Frontiers adventure), your wife should have no problem picking up SF even if she has barely played RPG's before.

The Zeb's Guide rules were IMO not as good and used the color band system from Marvel Super Heroes (and also used in Gamma World 3rd ed). Some folks liked that system though, so other's mileage may vary.
